Myths
Myths
- All they do is party.
True we like to have fun, but we also work hard in order to do so. We only have two parties per year and it is a fun way to attract new members. We have a series of community service projects, fundraising events, and Asian awareness events that we do not publicize. The only time we promote is when we have parties; therefore, people tend to assume that is all we do.
- All sorority girls smoke and drink.
We never encourage our members to smoke or drink. In fact, we have a no alcohol policy for our pledges. They are not allowed to smoke or drink while pledging for alpha Kappa Delta Phi. Afterward, it’s the member’s personal choice.
- Pledging will affect your grades.
Your first priority in college is getting your education; we understand that and will not stand in your way. We have an Academic Chair who monitors everyone’s grade and academic standing. All our pledges have study hours every week. We have had girls who maintained a 4.0 GPA while pledging and also girls who had to drop some of their classes. It depends mainly on your study habit and time management skills. If you don't study before you pledge, you will not study while you pledge.
- They do crazy things to their pledges.
We have an anti-hazing policy. We will not physically or emotionally harm you in anyway. Everything we do has a purpose. We want our pledges to learn many things, and that's what the pledging process revolves around. We want strong, independent women and will not degrade them to achieve that.
- You are paying them to be your friends.
Nothing is further from the truth. You cannot just pay and be a member, you have to earn your place. You learn many things while you are pledging, such as leadership, sacrifice, and love. You build a bond with all the girls in the sorority that you can never leave, and even if you don't pay them, they will still be your sisters for life.
- Their dues are so high, you have to be extremely wealthy to get in.
Our dues are one of the lowest of all Greek sororities. We are a non-profit organization; therefore, all the money goes back to you. The member's due goes into rush parties, formals, service projects, external events, and sisterhood events. The amount of pledge dues depends on the number of the pledge class. The sorority doesn't profit from pledge dues, they are to be spent on the pledges through pledge events. All of our members work and attend school simultaneously; therefore, we know how hard it is to support yourself. We will not have outrageous dues because we won't be able to afford it ourselves. In addition, you can use your pledge class' fundraising money towards anything you want, including dues. We never want money to be the reason you cannot join, that's not what we are about.
